Congratulations Clemente Graduates 2008!

Excerpt from Graduation Speech by Professor Tim McCarthy of Harvard University and The Dorchester Bard College Clemente Course:

“For the greater part of the last year, we have shared a common experience—a history as it were—of spending two evenings a week in the seminar room of the Codman Square Health Center, 450 Washington Street, studying the Humanities and learning from one another’s humanity. Every Monday and Wednesday, we have taken time out of our full and often very frantic lives to sit with Shakespeare and Sophocles, to view Picasso and Monet, to walk with Plato and Socrates, to march with President Lincoln and Dr. King. We have learned to read closely and write clearly. We have come to appreciate beauty and language, we have tried to figure out what makes men and women good or evil, and we have come up with our own definitions of justice and freedom—of what it means to be a good citizen.

In the process, I think we’ve learned to examine our own lives more deeply—to test and renew our faith in things, both seen and unseen—and we have learned to be more honest about the possibilities, and limitations, of the world in which we live. In short, we have done precisely what the Humanities ask of us: to examine what it means to be fully human so that we can all become more humane.”
